How to get started
STEP 1
the numbers (3 minutes)
- Standard deck has 52 cards
- Possible arrangements = 52! (52 factorial)
- 52! = 52 × 51 × 50 × 49 × ... × 2 × 1
- This equals approximately 8 × 10^67
- That's 8 followed by 67 zeros!
- For comparison:
- - Atoms on Earth: ~10^50
- - Stars in observable universe: ~10^24
- - Seconds since Big Bang: ~10^18
STEP 2
what this means (4 minutes)
- Every time you shuffle a deck, you almost certainly create an order that has NEVER existed before
- And will NEVER exist again
- Even if every human who ever lived shuffled a deck every second of their lives
- Even if aliens on a trillion planets did the same
- You'd never repeat an arrangement
- The number is incomprehensibly large
STEP 3
comprehension exercise (4 minutes)
- Try to grasp 52!:
- Imagine this: Start at equator, walk around Earth (40 million steps)
- Take one step every billion years
- When you complete the loop, remove one drop from the Pacific Ocean
- Repeat walking Earth and removing drops until Pacific is empty
- Lay a sheet of paper on the ground
- Refill Pacific one drop at a time, walking around Earth between each drop
- When Pacific is full, add one sheet to your stack
- Repeat entire process until paper stack reaches the Sun (93 million miles)
- Repeat ENTIRE process 3,000 times
- You still haven't reached 52! seconds
STEP 4
IMPLICATIONS (4 minutes)
- This demonstrates the counterintuitive nature of large numbers
- Shows why probability of specific complex events is essentially zero
- Helps understand why evolution takes so long (searching probability space)
- Why brute-forcing passwords takes forever
