How to Get Started

FIND YOUR INSECT (5 minutes)
  1. Look for insects: Garden, windowsill, sidewalk, under rocks, near flowers
  2. Good beginner insects: Ant, ladybug, butterfly, beetle, grasshopper, bee (observe from distance!)
  3. Carefully catch in jar (poke air holes in lid) or observe where it is
  4. Alternative: Take a clear photo and draw from that
OBSERVE CAREFULLY (5 minutes)
  1. All insects have same basic body plan—look for:
  2. - 3 body parts: head, thorax (middle), abdomen (back)
  3. - 6 legs (all attached to thorax)
  4. - Antennae (usually 2)
  5. - Wings (some have 2, some have 4, some have none)
  6. - Eyes (often compound/multiple lenses)
  7. Use magnifying glass if you have one
  8. Note: Color, size, patterns, special features
DRAW WHAT YOU SEE (7 minutes)
  1. Sketch outline first: three circles for body parts
  2. Add details: legs (count them!), antennae, wings, eyes
  3. Label parts: head, thorax, abdomen, legs, antennae, wings
  4. Note colors and patterns
  5. Write observations: 'Found on rose bush, moving slowly, brown with black spots'
IDENTIFY YOUR INSECT (3 minutes)
  1. Use app like iNaturalist or Google Lens
  2. Or search 'insect identification' + description
  3. Write scientific and common name on drawing

Common Challenges & Solutions

Every beginner faces obstacles. Here's how to overcome them:

⚠️ Insect won't stay still
Solution: Take a photo and draw from that. Or observe in jar briefly (release after). Cold insects move slower (but don't harm them). Remember: observation takes patience!
⚠️ Can't see details
Solution: Get closer or use magnifying glass. Take macro photo with phone (tap screen to focus). Some details are too small to see without microscope—draw what you can see.
⚠️ Can't identify insect
Solution: That's okay! Post photo on r/WhatsThisBug with location—experts will help. Even if you can't name it, you practiced observation and scientific drawing.
