How to get started
STEP 1
choose your palace (5 minutes)
- Select a familiar location you know well - your home, commute route, or favorite place
- Mentally walk through it - note distinct locations/landmarks
- You need 5-10 clear spots for your first attempt
- Example: Front door → living room couch → kitchen table → bathroom sink → bedroom closet
STEP 2
prepare your information (5 minutes)
- Start simple: Create a shopping list of 10 items
- Or try: Main points for a presentation you need to give
- Break complex information into concrete, memorable images
- The more vivid and unusual, the better you'll remember
STEP 3
place your memories (10 minutes)
- Mentally walk through your palace, one location at a time
- At each spot, place a vivid mental image of what you need to remember
- Example: Need to buy milk? Imagine a cow sitting on your couch, mooing loudly
- Need eggs? Visualize cracked eggs dripping down your kitchen table
- Make images strange, exaggerated, funny - this makes them stick
- Engage multiple senses: What does it look like? Sound like? Smell like?
STEP 4
recall your information (5 minutes)
- Mentally walk through your palace again
- At each location, the placed image will pop back into your mind
- Retrieve the information it represents
- Practice this walk-through 2-3 times
STEP 5
build your skill (ongoing)
- Start with short lists (5-10 items)
- Gradually increase complexity
- Create multiple palaces for different types of information
- Ancient Greeks memorized entire epic poems this way!
What you’ll need
- something to memorize
- familiar location

Common challenges
Every beginner faces obstacles. Here's how to overcome them:
Images not sticking
Solution: Make them MORE bizarre and vivid. Engage all senses. The weirder the image, the better it works. Don't be subtle!
Forgetting palace locations
Solution: Choose a location you know intimately. Practice the walk-through without placing memories first. Muscle memory helps.
