Common Challenges & Solutions

Every beginner faces obstacles. Here's how to overcome them:

⚠️ Clay cracks while drying
Solution: Dry slowly - cover with plastic, let air in gradually. Wedge clay thoroughly to remove air bubbles. Keep clay moist while working. Don't make walls too thin. Score and slip when joining pieces.
⚠️ Pieces fall apart
Solution: Score surfaces before joining (scratch with tool). Add slip (watery clay) to joints. Press pieces together firmly. Let joints dry slightly before continuing. Reinforce with coils if needed.
⚠️ Can't center clay on wheel
Solution: Start with small amount of clay. Use both hands, steady pressure. Keep body still, move hands. Practice centering before trying to throw. Take a class - in-person instruction helps.
⚠️ Glaze doesn't look right
Solution: Test glazes on small pieces first. Apply 2-3 even coats. Follow firing instructions exactly. Different clays need different glazes. Experiment and keep notes on what works.
