How to Get Started
MATERIALS & SETUP (10 minutes)
Paper: Any paper works, larger is more freeing (11x14 or bigger)
Medium: Markers, colored pencils, paint, pastels - whatever you have
No erasers: Abstract art is about flow, not perfection
Comfortable space: Music optional, helps some people get in creative flow
WARMING UP (15 minutes)
Continuous line: Draw without lifting pen, let hand wander
Shape exploration: Circles, triangles, organic blobs - no plan, just draw
Mark making: Different types of lines - wavy, jagged, dotted, thick, thin
No judgment: This isn't about good or bad, just making marks
CREATING YOUR PIECE (45 minutes)
Start anywhere: First mark on page, react to it with next mark
Build relationships: How do shapes interact? Overlap? Separate? Touch?
Add color: Fill some shapes, leave others outlined, create contrast
Vary density: Some areas busy, others sparse - creates visual interest
Rotate paper: View from different angles, add to weak areas
FINISHING TOUCHES (15 minutes)
Step back: View from distance, note what draws your eye
Balance: Add elements to balance composition if needed
Know when to stop: Easy to overwork abstract art, trust your instincts
Title it: Abstract titles can be literal (Shapes #3) or evocative (Morning Energy)
Reflect: What do you see? What does it remind you of? Art is personal interpretation
