How to get started
learn flag design rules (5 minutes)
- Good flags follow these principles:
- Keep it simple - child should be able to draw from memory
- Use meaningful symbolism - colors and shapes represent ideas
- Use 2-3 basic colors - too many colors looks messy
- No lettering or seals - hard to see from distance
- Be distinctive - shouldn't look like other flags
- Color meanings: Red=courage/blood, Blue=freedom/water, Green=land/hope, Yellow=sun/wealth, White=peace/purity, Black=determination
create your country (3 minutes)
- Imagine your country:
- - What's it called?
- - What's it known for? (mountains, oceans, farming, technology)
- - What values are important? (peace, bravery, unity, learning)
- - Any special symbols? (animal, plant, star, sun)
- Example: 'Republic of Montara' - mountainous, values education and unity
design your flag (10 minutes)
- Sketch rectangle (most flags are rectangular)
- Choose 2-3 colors based on your country's values
- Add simple shapes: stripes (horizontal or vertical), stars, cross, circle, triangle
- Incorporate your country's special symbol simply
- Example: Blue background (sky), white mountain triangle (landscape), gold star (excellence in education)
- Draw cleanly with ruler for straight lines

- Explain what each element means
- Example: 'The blue represents our clear mountain skies. The white triangle symbolizes our mountains. The gold star represents our commitment to education.'

Common challenges
Every beginner faces obstacles. Here's how to overcome them:
Flag looks too complicated
Solution: Simplify! Remove elements until you can draw it from memory. Simplest flags are often best: Look at Japan (red circle, white background), Canada (red-white-red with maple leaf). Less is more.
Not sure what symbols to use
Solution: Look at real flags for inspiration: Stars (USA), crosses (Nordic countries), stripes (many nations), crescents (Islamic nations), animals (Mexico, Sri Lanka). Adapt ideas to your imaginary country.
