Create soda

Time needed: 3-4 hours Difficulty: Beginner Category: Cooking

About this idea

Craft homemade carbonated beverages with custom flavors—healthier, more creative than store-bought, and surprisingly simple. Two methods: (1) SodaStream/carbonation system—carbonate water, add syrups/flavors; (2) Fermentation—ginger bug (wild yeast starter) or champagne yeast creates natural carbonation.

Make syrups: simmer sugar with water and flavorings (citrus zest, herbs, spices, fruit), strain, cool. Classic recipes: ginger ale (ginger syrup + carbonated water), cream soda (vanilla), root beer (sassafras or sarsaparilla extract), lemon-lime. Advanced: shrubs (vinegar-based syrups—tangy complexity), botanical sodas (lavender, rosemary, elderflower).

Control sweetness—much less sugar than commercial sodas. Fermented sodas contain probiotics. Fun experimentation. Great for mocktails. Kids love making custom flavors. Reduce plastic waste with reusable bottles.
