How to get started
planning your design (30 minutes)
- Choose materials: Metal pipes/keys (bright tone), shells/glass (delicate), bamboo (natural)
- Sound preference: Metallic for clear tones, natural for subtle sounds
- Size: 12-18 inches total length works well for most spaces
- Sketch design: Plan how pieces will hang and interact
gathering materials (45 minutes)
- Top support: Wood slice, embroidery hoop, driftwood, or sturdy wire ring
- Hanging elements: 5-8 items of varying lengths (metal tubes, spoons, shells, keys)
- Stringing: Fishing line, strong twine, or thin wire
- Clapper/striker: Central piece that hits others (stone, large bead, small branch)
- Tools: Drill for holes, scissors, pliers
ASSEMBLY (1 hour)
- Drill holes: Top of each chime piece and around support ring
- Cut strings: Varying lengths so pieces hang at different heights
- Attach to support: Tie each chime piece securely, space evenly around ring
- Add clapper: Center piece hangs freely to strike other pieces in wind
- Hanging string: Strong cord from support to hang chime
tuning & finishing (15 minutes)
- Test sounds: Gently tap pieces together, adjust lengths if needed
- Weather protection: Seal wood with outdoor varnish, ensure knots are tight
- Find the spot: Hang where it catches breeze but not too windy (breaks easily)
- Enjoy: Listen for the unique sounds your creation makes
